Mozzarella Cheese

My First Try at Making Mozzarella Cheese Making

So my mom has been making cheese for a couple years now and I finally decided to take the plunge.

I thought I would try Mozzarella first, as it is just a 30 minute process versus hours for the others.  So here goes.

It started out pretty good.  No, I should say it was going pretty good.  And it was really fun too.

I enjoyed watching the milk turn into curds and then to cheese.  It was very rewarding!

There are so many recipes on the internet about all this that I wont go into details.  I actually bought a kit that had all the necessary ingredients in it in order to do this.  If you are interested the company is New England Cheesemaking Supply Co.  (No, I am not affiliated with them at all, they are just a fabulous cheese making supply company!)

So here is what happened...

first you heat the milk, add the citric acid and continue to heat to a certain temp.   Add 1/4 of the renet tablet and...

It will turn to curds, like magic!

now you drain the curds and start pressing it together.  You will heat it in the microwave for 30 second increments 3 times kneading like dough each time.  It will be hot but that is the only way you can get it to the right consistency.

See, knead like dough

After the first 2 times heating it up you will add some salt. Now knead again until...

It is the consistency of taffy.  Kind of.  It will be stretchy and stringy.

Heat it one last time, and shape it into whatever you would like.  I chose bite size pieces, I thought they were so cute, and easy to eat, of course.  :)

Then I decided to add a bit of olive oil and some italian spices...

Oooohhh, and it was sooooooo delicious!  I couldn't get enough.  I had to take it to work to share with everyone so I wouldn't eat it all.

So, there you have it, my very first attempt at cheese making.

It was AWSOME!!!!!!!
