Re-cycled Glitter Crayons

How Fun, right?!         GLITTER!!!!!!       I don't think you can go wrong with glitter.

These were so fun and easy to make.  And I was happy to get all those old crayon pieces out of a bucket!  The kids really liked helping with this project too!

Well, in this picture you can't really see all the broken piece, They are all probably at the bottom.  At any rate, all you need is some old crayons, an oven safe pan, any shape will do, and your oven!

These are actually ice cube trays, I wasn't sure how they would hold up but they did great since the oven is at such a low temp.

Oh yeah, and glitter of course.  You have to have glitter, right?!

So, peel all the paper off your crayons…

Place your crayons in your molds...

sprinkle with glitter and place in a 200˚ oven for about 10 minutes.

Or until they are all melty, like this...

You could sprinkle some glitter on top as they start to harden too.

And another 10 minutes later you can pop them out of the trays and you have glitter crayons.  You can give them away as gifts or keep them for yourself. 

Aren't they cute!

I loved how they turned out and the kids love using them as well!

Q-Tip and Cotton Ball Jar

Isn't this the cutest thing ever?  I seriously love it!  Ok, I may feel a little silly blogging about it but I really thought it was so cute, I just had to share.  

And made from things I already had in  my house.  As a matter of fact, I needed to clear out some of my junk just sitting collecting dust.  I truly love the blue ball jars and the old insulators.  I have several and just cant bring myself to get rid of them.

I thought this was a great way to integrate the look into rooms other than my kitchen too!

All you are going to need is a canning jar and an old insulator.

Fill the jar with cotton balls....

fill the insulator with Q-tips....

And fit the insulator on top of the jar!  See, almost too easy to share with you.  But ho wmuch do you love it.

DIY Magnetic Spice Rack

My DIY magnetic spice rack...

I am sooooo excited about this project.  I was getting tired of having all of my spices  tucked into my corner cupboard or into my tiny spice shelf.  And having them on the counter top was really not gong to work for me so this was my only option.

So here it is.  The best solution I could find.  The only thing is there was no way I was going to pay what they wanted for a pre-made one.  Even some of the containers to make one myself on amazon were slightly rediculous.  

So I decided I could make one myself.  Why not, right?

So I suppose we should just get started, right?!?!

All you are going to need is: 

an old metal cookie sheet (or a new one, whatever you like)

some small 4 oz canning jars

some rare earth magnets (the ones i used are pretty small, to do it over again I would have purchsed bigger ones.  These ones said they could hold up to 2lbs each but I still ended up needing 4 per jar.  I think if I would have purchased bigger ones I could have gotten away with only 2 per jar.  Just a side note)

Now take your favorite glue and start gluing magnets to lids...

fill your jars with spices of your liking.  (I went with the ones I use the most)...

label what it is on the bottom...

And done, super great, right?  

Oooohhhh, I can not even begin to tell you how fabulous it has been to have all the spices I use the most right there next to the stove.  No digging, no pulling everything out to find what I need, no cursing at the set up of my cupboards, (oh, you don't do that, well any way).  

As soon as you do this you are just going to love it.  I need to secure it a little better to the wall but that will come later.  As for now, it is one of the best things I have done for organizaion so far in my kitchen.

DIY Soap Pump From a Mason Jar

Mason Jar Soap Pump

So I have seen these all over the Internet lately and have been just dying to make one!  I really love the old blue Ball jars but could not fathom cutting a hole in the lid of one for some reason. Just me I guess, I mean what else are you going to use it for, right?  But I just couldn't do it. So for now I just used a jar I had lying around but will at least put it in a blue jar with a regular lid at some point I'm sure. 

But here it is: How to make a mason jar pump soap dispenser. 

All you are going to need is:

One mason jar

An old pump (like from a lotion or other soap dispenser)

A glue gun

A screw driver

A hammer

(Or a drill press if you have one)

First poke a hole in your lid with the screw driver and hammer. 

Now pry back the metal until it is big enough to fit the bottom portion of your pump through.  (It's not pretty but it doesn't much matter. It will all be covered!) 

Hot glue the pump to the lid. 

And fill the jar with your favorite soap (or some you have made).

Done!  Aren't they so stinkin' cute!  I really live them. Hey may be Christmas presents this year. It's early enough that I will have time to stock up I think.  

How easy, right?  This is seriously about a 10 minute project.

Keep Tomato Paste Handy

Tablespoons of Tomato Paste

I don't know about you but I have a ton of recipes that call for just a Tbsp or 2 of tomato paste.  And really I kind of refuse to buy the squeezable tube because it seems wasteful to me.  One, I live in Montana, I can't recycle plastic, I mean at all!!!!!  And two, the can is just cheeper.  

So here is what I do, and it takes me all of about 2 minutes so prepare.  Open your can of tomato paste, I like the big cans, that way I have to do it less frequently...

Spoon out about a Tbsp....

Place it on a cookie sheet.  (I like to put it on either plastic wrap or tin foil, that way I don't have to clean the cookie sheet but it doesn't matter either way, it pops right off.)

And stick it in the freezer!  After a few hours take it off the cookie sheet and place it in a ziploc bag and back in the freezer it goes.  Now whenever you need a Tbsp of tomato paste, it is there waiting for you!  

Just thought I would share one of my little secrets with you.  I have been doing this for years, really, and it has saved me time, money, and guilt about recycling in the long run.

Color Coded Organization

Organizing The Kids Accessory Drawer

So I have this thing, and I'm not saying it's normal, but it's my thing, I own it.  Whatever, right?  Anyway, I like things to be organized by color and in a certain order so this....

was a bit much for me today.  I had finally had enough.  I found some little bottles a friend gave me in my craft room and went to town!

See, even this started to make me happy...

And finally, this made my day.  It is so much easier to look at.  And now every time I open the drawer its like a little happy surprise...

Again, I have a think, whatever, right?!?

Resolutions

New Year, New Goals!

I have made a couple of resolutions this year, all of which have to do with keeping the house running smoothly. As I posted the end of last year, I felt like my house was taking control of us, and I want it to be more simple.

My first resolution was one I started about 2 weeks before the new year. It was to keep up better on the house cleaning. Whew, seriously, what a challenge for me. I really hate house cleaning and have put it by the way side and only done what is necessary for so long I was in desperate need of help! So I did what any house mom would do, I went in seek of the master, the zen house keeping, decorating, cooking master, Martha! Oh that's right, you heard me, Martha...

I have not always been a huge Martha fan, but as of late I have to say, I am beginning to turn into one. She has these printables for organizing your house and printables for keeping up on the house work that I have found extremely useful.

All I did was print them off,




























laminate them (or you could just put them in protective sleeves),

and throw them in a binder.  Now I have a list of things to do everyday to help keep up on the house.

( I always keep a few binders around the house, just in case, you know.  I pick them up for cheep after school starts.)























I cant tell you how helpful they have been.  Not that you don't know what needs to be done around your house but for me it helps to have a list to look at, a room to focus on everyday, and a list.  I don't know if you are like me but I really love, love, LOVE having lists.  I feel like I really got something done when I can check off three or four things a day.  It makes me happy.  (It's the little things I tell ya!)

Now I have a cleaning binder that I get out everyday, see what is on the schedule for the day, and now that the house is caught up (it was quite a bit of work to get it there at first), it is truly just a few minutes a day.

Soon I will share with you my next resolution for this year.  I want to save money and time around the dinner hour.
