Mad Hatter Tea Party Invitations

DIY Tea Party Invitations

So I finally started on Charly's birthday party invitations. I am so excited for this theme. I think you will love it too!  As you will be able to infer from the invitations, we are having  a tea party!!!!!!  Yeah!  So here is how I made them, they were pretty easy to put together and really came out nice I think.  There are a couple steps, which I am not that into most of the time, but they were not very time consuming at all, which is what I fear most with multiple steps...

All you are going to need, is your favorite scrapbook paper, a print out of your information, a glue stick and some string.

Anyway, I started with these cut outs to make little books of sorts.

Here are the little information pages I printed out.  I got online and found a couple of images and sayings I liked and typed them up, printed and cut them out.  They fit perfectly on the pages.

I glued on the information pages, one to the front and one to the back.

Cut a few small squares then cut diagonal on the corners to make it look like the tea tabs on top of the bags.

I poked holes in the tops of the tabs and the actual invitations ...

And finally I tied a string to both pieces. See, now it looks like a tea bag. How stinkin' cute is that, right?!?

So, I suppose you can guess we are having a tea party of sorts but wait till you see the rest of the decorations! Oh I seriously can't wait!

'Space Bar' Stick

Need Help Teaching When To Space in a Sentence?

I saw this on one of my favorite blogs and just had to make one for Charly. It is seriously genius! Charly loves to write but has been having some difficulty understanding when to space in a sentence. First she just wrote random letters, then wanted to only copy words, now she finally has the confidence to sound out words and really has been trying but when I tried to teach her spacing she started spacing every single letter. And I think she was getting spaces and periods confused because there was always a dot between the letters.

I don't really know, but at any rate, I wanted to help her and I was so excited about this idea. A space bar, or stick, whatever you want to call it.

All you are going to need is a popcicle stick, a stamp pad and a sharpie.

Paint your popcicle stick with the stamp pad (I chose pink because I have a seriously girly girl and I wanted her to be able to find it easily).

Then draw whatever you want on there. I decided to call mine a 'space bar' but I also drew a space ship on there to really drive home the multiple meanings.

What do you think? I am really hoping it helps, I'll let you know how it goes.

Indoor Campout!

Winter Activities....

I work night shift. It's not glamorous but it works for us. On the nights that I have to work and daddy has to stay home with the kids he tries to come up with something fun to do with them. You know, to have a special daddy daughter bonding night. But it's not always easy coming up with things in the winter. Inside games are limited.

Sometimes they play wii games, sometimes they have a movie night...

But last weekend he did something really fun with them.

They had an indoor Campout!

How fun is that? I took them out to get dinner and when we got home, just before I had to run to work, he had the tent set up in the living room.

The kids had a blast and it kept everyone entertained.

We left the tent up all weekend and hey had friends over and watched movies and ate popcorn and did all played all the fun camping games, but inside!

What a fabulous idea, I thought, and all sponsored by daddy. I think the kids are so going to look forward to it again next winter!

I've Been On a Homemade Roll...

I have been on a DIY health and beauty product kick lately.

When I was a kid my mom made all sorts of stuff, and to her dismay (I think) I was far less than interested. But of course now I can't seem to get enough.

So yesterday I made soap...

And today I tried my hand at lotion.

We will see how it all turns out and if it works ill post tuts later. Wish me luck!

Homemade Pop Tarts

DIY Toaster Pastries

So, I recently bought a new book.  And quite frankly, I can't get enough of it!  I have only had it in the house for a couple days and already I have made about 5 things out of it with a list of 10 more to make in the next week or so.

It is this book, Homemade Pantry...

I made the granola, I made the pie crust, I made the potato leak soup, and these...

Homemade pop tarts!  (ok, this is not my picture, it is the one off the front of the book, I may have forgotten to get a picture of theses before we ate them all.)  I am so excited to share these with you you can't even believe.

So I did use her pie crust recipe just to see how I liked it compared with mine with a couple adjustments (because I can't leave well enough alone).  Nothing too drastic, I just substituted some whole wheat pastry flour for some regular flour and added some almond flour for flavor.  But really any great pie crust will work.  Here is the one I posted a while ago but if you have a favorite, do it up.

First make you filling, I just made a simple cranberry peach filling.

Heat up some water, your cranberries, and some sugar (about a Tbsp),

peach jelly and when it boils add some corn starch.

Mix it up and let it sit till your ready to add it to the pie crust.

Roll out your pie crust and cut into rectangles, as I apparently refuse to measure, I just cut about where I think I should.  But if you are a stick to the rules kind of girl, then by all means measure and cut.

Brush your rectangles with an egg wash...

Add your filling.....

Place another rectangle on top and seal the edges...

Awesome right!!!!!  So, they may be more like pocket pies rather than pop tarts but really, who doesn't need pie for breakfast!

DIY Cupcake Stand

Cupcake Stand From Thrifted Items...

I told you already I love thrifting!  And I got all the items for this craft for about $3.  How can you go wrong with that, right?  I wanted to make a couple cake/ appetizer stands as well as a couple dishes that barely stood off the table.

all you are going to need to make one cake stand is:

 2 large plates
1 appetizer plates or tea cup saucers
 2-4 tea cups or
 2 candle sticks

Now just start stacking and glueing.  How easy is that?  I used the same method as last year when I made a little different one.

Like I said, I wanted a couple taller cupcake stands to add height to the table as well as a couple shorter serving platters but I still wanted them up off the table.

For the shorter ones I just purchased a couple short candle stick holders and glued them to the bottom of the plates.  Instant lift!

Love it!  Are you excited about the party, can you guess what it is yet?

My Thrifted Pillowcase

A Pillowcase and an Idea

I found this pillowcase at the thrift store the other day and really just fell in love with it. I don't know why, it was calling me I think. And for .55 cents, who argues when it is calling you?  Anyway, I bought it knowing I could do something fab with it when I got home.

After I was home however I couldn't decide what to do with it. First I thought, maybe a dress for the girls, but no, then the design would be backwards. Then I thought I could cut it down and make something, but I really didn't want to loose the balance of the design. So what to do.

Then it hit me, how about an apron. How easy would that be?  A 5 minute project, that's how easy!

I just pinned a piece of lace to the top of the pillowcase with enough left over the ends to tie.

Now sew together and done!

How easy and cute is that?!?

I knew you would love it!

Now hurry, go make a few, they are so easy and so cute.  You are going to love them!  And if they're lucky, and your a nice person, maybe your friends will love them too, if you decide to gift them, IF they are lucky...
